The Blue Bar
Two bars measure every relationship
Let us drain the pink one to save the green one
And that was the promise we both made
but I couldn’t do it
I can’t imagine how you did
So I got to work, lost track of time
Made something of my own to contain everything
So when we started to talk again
neither of us were the same
Oh when we’re apart I go there
and drown in it every night
Make other bars seem so small
In our reunion, it overflows
and whatever it is
pours down the space between our shoulders
I thought about what color it should be
Mint, like your old phone case
Gold, like ribbons on a present
Even the rainbow came to mind
but that just defeats the point
Maybe chocolate, the opposite of this
Perishable, mostly sweet and
Shareable with your family and friends
I chose Blue, cuz it’s your favorite
I know that it’s my favorite too
Let it belong to you
I’ve become an alien in this world
and my interface unrecognizable
What happened to yours in those sixteen days?
What remains I still don’t know
Now I live with a crippling fear
What if I meet someone and then I’ll need to do this again?
Consoled by a cold feeling
I don’t think I will ever need to do this again
The green bar is fine, we’re good at this
The pink bar is as empty as should be
The Blue Bar is me, the best of me
might just be the end of me
my deepest secret
And now you see it
