Race a Postcard

From the album Free as a Bird

Dear Sarah, I'm doing mostly fine
How are you
How are you really?
Are you still singing the songs you did with me?
Cuz I think I know when I can hear them again

This letter took me way too long to write
six months forever in my mind
but now I'm sitting here feeling like it's a waste of paper
cuz I know that you know

I'm pulled by strings of a thousand miles
tied to somewhere I've never been to
but I'll try not to drift in this world
and do what I have to do

Crunching snow and cracking ice
sipping tea without enough flavor
until I can race a postcard
coming back to you

Ann Arbor has been nothing but kind to me
push me forward with refreshing wind
but there seems to be something else I'm missing
something that only an old friend can bring

Your city hurts me just a little bit
I keep thinking 'bout how I could've been there
but at least we still share all these little things
and here is one more you should know

I'm pulled by strings of a thousand miles
tied to somewhere I've never been to
but I'll try not to drift in this world
and do what I have to do

Crunching snow and cracking ice
sipping tea without enough flavor
until I can race a postcard
coming back to you

Until I'm at your door to say
dragging my parachute behind me
each and every "I missed you"
